"A
Home Away From Home"
The Russellville Senior Services Center gives people of Russellville 55
and over a place to go for fellowship and activities. Members
of the center play cards and board games, shoot pool or join together
to make beautiful hand crafted quilts.
They have
a covered dish supper once a month for members that want to show
off their culinary skills and they get together one other night
each month for dinner at one of the local restaurants.
There is
no charge for membership; interested parties fill out a simple
form to join the Russellville Senior Services Center.
Congregate
meals are served daily for persons aged 60 and over. There is
no charge for the meals although they do accept donations. Meals
are also prepared for the local "Meals on Wheels" program,
a lunch delivery service for 24 people around the Russellville
area. Meals are delivered to homebound persons by a large team
of volunteers on a daily basis. Another similar service is operated
out of the center called "Homebound Meals", which is
administered by The Northwest Alabama Council of Local Governments
(NACOLG).
Services
of the Russellville Senior Services Center go further, though. They have an RX program,
assisting the elderly with medicine, monitor blood pressure and
offer help and advice to seniors regarding other issues such as
Medicare. They also act as a sort of "watchful eye"
for the communities seniors. If problems are evident or suspected
such as neglect or abuse, the center will contact the proper authorities
to address the situation.

Cathy Garrison is assisted by 3 volunteers in the operation
of the Russellville Senior Services Center. Cathy likes to think of the Center as
"A home away from home". She loves the job and the
people and say's "Besides, I'm a member too!" |
